# Gather resources and gems in Vanguard

> Set up Vanguard's Gather card: pick resources by priority, farm gems with a Tier 2 license and daily gem limits, limit marches and distance, hop under-full marches and keep combat commanders home.

The **Gather** page in Vanguard sends your fastest gathering commander pairs to the nearest free resource nodes and keeps them busy, so your marches are never sitting idle at home. The card works like every other feature card: a switch, **Run now**, **Settings ▾**, **Advanced** and **Test run — sends nothing**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Gem farming works only with a **Tier 2 license**. Vanguard Farm, the lighter edition, never gathers gems. See [License](/vanguard/getting-started/license).

## What the page shows

At the top of the page you see:

| Box | What it shows |
| - | - |
| **Marches out** | Marches on the map, out of your march slot limit. |
| **March slot limit** | How many marches your account can have out. Vanguard learns this from the game. Press **re-learn** after you unlock a new slot. |
| **Gathering commanders idle** | Idle gathering commanders out of those you own. |

Below it, a list of your gathering commanders shows each one's level, skill and whether it is idle, out (and where) or in a garrison.

## Choose what to gather

**1. Pick resources**

Under **What to gather**, tap the resource chips (**Food**, **Wood**, **Stone**, **Gold**, **Gems**). The order you switch them on is the priority. Keep at least one on.

**2. Gems only (optional)**

Tap **Gems only** to send every gathering march to gem nodes. This appears only when gem farming is allowed by your license.

**3. Set the marches**

In **Marches for gathering**, type how many marches to use. 0 = every free march; the rest stay idle for other tasks. With a number above 0, each march gets its own picker: a resource, or **Any (chips above)**.

**4. Limit the distance**

**Max distance from your city** is in tiles. 0 = any distance. 1 tile = one step of the X/Y numbers the game shows on the map: a city at X:625 and a gem mine at X:630 are 5 tiles apart.

## Gem march pairs

With gem farming allowed, **Gem march pairs** picks the commanders for your gem marches. Press **+ add pair** and choose two commanders. Each gem march takes the first pair whose commanders are both home and free. When none is free, Vanguard picks the best pair itself. Your pairs also go ahead of a saved gem march.

## Toggles

| Toggle | What it does |
| - | - |
| **hop** | When a returning march is not full, Vanguard sends it to another node instead of home. |
| **gatherers only** | Keeps combat commanders at home. When it is off, any idle commander can be sent, combat ones included, and the page shows a red **OFF** warning. Switching it off asks for a deliberate second tap. |

## Settings

| Setting | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Troops per gem march** | Troops sent in each gem march. |
| **Only nodes your march reaches within** | Going by how fast your own gathering marches really moved. 0 = no limit. |
| **Send a march out again the moment it gets home** | Sends a returning march straight back out instead of waiting for the next check. |
| **Stop a gem march where it is instead of walking home** | Then finds it a new gem node instead of letting it walk home while the map is searched. |
| **Longest walk to a node** | In minutes. |
| **Check every** | How often Vanguard looks for idle marches. |

## Gem limits

Gem limits keep your account safe by capping how much gem farming Vanguard does. Vanguard sets limits for every user. Your own limits can only make them stricter, never looser. When a limit is reached, no new gem march goes out. Marches already out come home normally.

Limits count per game account. The day resets at 00:00 UTC (game time), and the gems-today count follows the same day.

| Setting | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Most gems per day** | Stops sending gem marches once this account has brought home this many gems today. 0 = no limit of your own. |
| **Most hours of gem farming per day** | Stops sending gem marches once they have been out this many hours today. 0 = no limit of your own. |
| **Farm gems only between (game time, UTC)** | Sends gem marches only inside these hours, for example `08:00-12:00, 18:00-23:00`. A range like `22:00-02:00` runs past midnight. Empty = any time. |
| **Farm gems like a person (random breaks)** | Each day's limits come out a little lower, the hours start a little late and end a little early, and gem marches take short random breaks. |

> [!NOTE]
>
> If Vanguard's own limit is lower than yours, Vanguard's limit wins. Hours set by Vanguard apply as well as yours.

## Advanced

| Setting | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Check once an hour whether you gained a march slot** | Sends one extra march once an hour to see whether the limit went up after a new VIP level or a march-slot item. |
| **After a march finishes, wait at least** | Minimum pause before Vanguard sends the same march out again. |
| **After a march finishes, wait at most** | Maximum pause before Vanguard sends the same march out again. |
| **If the game has not caught up, look again after** | Retry interval when the game still shows the march as out. |
| **Stop looking again after** | Give-up timeout for waiting on a march to register as home. |
| **Gem nodes to try before giving up** | How many gem nodes Vanguard attempts before stopping the search. |
| **Rings to search around a stopped gem march first** | Searches right around the stopped march first, one ring wider each time, before searching around your city. 0 = always around your city. |
| **Extra, wider gem searches** | Additional wide searches for gem nodes. |
| **Look again for a stopped gem march every** | Retry interval for a gem march that is stopped in place. |
