# Shield check: see when a governor's peace shield ends

> Leadership guide to the !shield and /shield commands. Find out when a governor's peace shield ends, in game or in Discord, and what each reply means.

  This page is for alliance leadership only. Only R5 and heirs can use `!shield` in game. In Discord, only members with the leadership role can use `/shield`.

Shield check tells you when a governor's peace shield ends. The bot looks at the governor's city on the map and replies with the time left. Use it to plan rallies, check on a target, or see if an ally is protected. For automatic warnings before a shield drops, see [shield and teleport alerts](/leadership/shield-alerts). ## Who can use it

* **In game:** R5 of the bot's alliance and heirs on the Alliance tab.
* **In Discord:** members with your server's leadership role.

Everyone else gets a short refusal and no shield information.

## Check a shield in game

Type `!shield` followed by a governor name or governor ID in any chat channel. The bot replies in the same channel. If you type it in a private message to the bot, the answer comes back as a private message.

You can also type `!bubble` instead of `!shield`. Typing `!shield` on its own does nothing.

  A governor ID always finds the right person. Use it when several governors have similar names.

## Check a shield in Discord

1. Run `/shield` in a channel on your server.
2. In the **governor** box, enter a governor name or governor ID.
3. Wait a few seconds. The bot posts the answer in the channel where you ran the command.

The Discord answer also shows the city's coordinates, for example `X:568 Y:672`.

## What the replies mean

| Reply | What it means |
| - | - |
| `Kozan: shield ends in 3h 12m (19:40 UTC)` | The governor has a shield. It ends after the time shown. |
| `Kozan: no shield` | The bot found the city and it has no shield right now. |
| `Kozan: shield not readable` | The bot could not see the city. This does **not** mean there is no shield. |
| `Kozan: no governor found` | No governor matches that name or ID. Check the spelling or use the governor ID. |
| `Kozan: shield check already running` | Someone already asked about this governor. Wait for that answer. |
| `Kozan: busy, try again later` | The bot is already running two shield checks for your alliance. Try again in a minute or two. |

If a governor also has a newcomer (system) shield, the bot adds it to the same line, for example `; system shield ends in 2h 5m (18:33 UTC)`.

### Only one check per person at a time

If you send several `!shield` messages very quickly, the bot answers only the last one. Send one name, wait for the answer, then send the next.

### When the bot can't read a shield

The bot can only see cities on the map it is on. That's your home kingdom, or the shared map during KvK. Governors in other kingdoms always show as `shield not readable`.

## Turn shield check on or off

Shield check is a feature called **Shield Check** that leadership can turn on or off.

* **In game:** when Shield Check is off, the bot ignores `!shield` and sends no reply.
* **In Discord:** when Shield Check is off, `/shield` replies `Shield check is turned off.`

## Other replies you might see

* `!shield is for R5 and heirs only.`: you're not R5 or an heir.
* `could not check permissions - try again later`: the bot couldn't confirm your rank. Try again shortly.
* `give a governor name or a governor id`: the name or ID wasn't valid. Names can be up to 40 characters.
* `The bot didn't answer in time.` (Discord only): the bot may be offline. Try again shortly.
